In a deal worth a whopping $13 billion, they've ordered 75 brand-new Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. But here's where it gets controversial: this purchase comes hot on the heels of their earlier acquisition of 150 Airbus A321neos, valued at $24 billion. Since its maiden flight in 2009, FlyDubai has been a loyal Boeing customer, so this Airbus deal is a significant shift.
Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, chairman of both FlyDubai and Emirates, emphasized the importance of proactive fleet planning to meet the growing demand for travel. He believes anticipating future needs is key to the success of any airline, and today's announcement reflects that commitment.
FlyDubai made the announcement without a news conference, leaving Boeing with no immediate comment. However, they did reveal they have options for an additional 75 Boeing aircraft as part of the deal.
And this is the part most people miss: the rapid growth of passengers at Dubai International Airport, the world's busiest for international travel, underscores Dubai's pivotal role as a global aviation hub. With 70.1 million passengers already this year, the airport is on track to break its own records.
The city-state's second airport, Al Maktoum International Airport at Dubai World Central, is hosting the biennial Dubai Air Show, where major aircraft orders have been made by both Emirates and FlyDubai. These purchases will fuel a significant expansion of routes for these state-owned airlines as they move to Al Maktoum, likely beginning in 2032.
The United Kingdom's Export Finance has issued a $3.5 billion expression of interest letter to back construction at Al Maktoum, providing guarantees to British firms involved in the airport project. Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports, described it as a "massive effort of international cooperation" and expressed hope for an airport that not only handles 150 million annual passengers but also exemplifies the best technology and processes.
Griffiths also spoke about the innovations he hopes to see at the new airport, including an expansion of efforts at Dubai International Airport that allow first- and business-class passengers to clear immigration seamlessly through a tunnel. He envisions a system where biometric signatures are captured discreetly, ensuring a smooth and efficient journey for customers.
Dubai International Airport, or DXB, is the home base for Emirates, the long-haul carrier that powers the network of state-owned and state-linked businesses known as "Dubai Inc." The expansion of Al Maktoum, or DWC, will also drive a major real estate boom in the sheikhdom and its southern reaches. Dubai plans to move its airport operations to DWC, about 45 kilometers away from DXB.
While Dubai's real estate boom and record tourism numbers have made it a popular destination, the city is now facing increasing traffic and costs, putting pressure on both its citizens and the foreign residents who drive its economy. Last year, DXB saw a record 92.3 million passengers, up from 86.9 million in 2023.
In its rolling 12-month passenger numbers, DXB had 93.8 million passengers as of the end of September, indicating that the airport is well on its way to breaking its record again this year.
